RALEIGH JAYCEES TURKEY SHOOT

The longest running game at the North Carolina State Fair and easily one of the most popular.

Since 1952 we have offered a safe and fun environment for the general public to experience shooting at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. The event began as a fundraiser to raise money to build the Jaycee City Park in Raleigh, NC.

Over the last 54 years, the population of the Raleigh area has tripled and the state fair has grown with it. One thing that has remained the same since we opened is the community’s love of the Turkey Shoot. We are the only event at the state fair that allows participants to fire real guns. The Turkey Shoot is the longest running game at the North Carolina State Fair and is easily one of the most popular. At our peak times, fair attendees will wait in line watching the other shooters for 30-45 minutes for the opportunity to shoot a 20-gauge shotgun and the chance to win a turkey or a T-Shirt. Our Turkey Shoot consists of 12 participants shooting 20-gauge shotguns at targets.

The closest pellet to the cross hairs wins a frozen turkey or a Turkey Shoot T-Shirt. Our participants are 12 years old and older and have varying levels of experience with firearms. All participants listen to our safety speech and instructions. We offer one-on-one assistance to anyone who requests it. We have first time shooters nearly every round and their first experience is in a safe and fun environment as they shoot against their friends and family.

Points of Interest:

  • Our event is so popular that “The Cat’s Meow” sells woodcarvings of our building to the general public.
  • Our participants are eager to tell us about their history with the event and will often arrive wearing the shirts they won in years past.
  • One family told us that their son has won the Thanksgiving Turkey for their family at our event every year for the last 20 years.
  • The TS is constantly voted one of the most popular events of the Jaycees themselves. Volunteers run our event and we often have to turn people away because too many people want to come out to work.
  • Our event is always one of the most popular for the Carnival workers themselves.  We will see the same faces every day as they spend their breaks during the day playing our game.
