File Formats

Zip (and GZip)

We use ZIP and/or GZip to "compress" a lot of files on our website to help

save space
make the files smaller for faster downloading

All common computers can deal with these files. Since we've "zipped" them up, you need to "unzip them" after you download them. Very often that involves nothing more than doublie-clicking on the file.

Windows - many Windows machines come with the Zip utility. If you do not have a zip utility, grab one from WinZip.
Gzip can be found at www.gzip.org (but comes pre-installed on Linux and Mac OS X machines (and/or use Stuffit)
Mac OS 9/X - use Stuffit (included on almost all Macs)
Unix - zip seems to be included in most /usr/bin installations.
